Iraqi Council of Ministers Approves 5G Mobile Company, Strengthens Diplomatic Relations

The Iraqi Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, held its 10th regular session on Tuesday, addressing significant national developments and advancing key policy initiatives. The Council approved the establishment of the National Mobile Telecommunications Company, which will operate the 5G national license in collaboration with Vodafone Group.

The new company will be a private limited entity, with equal participation from three government bodies: the Ministry of Communications’ Al-Salam General Company, the State Pension Fund, and the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI). Each entity will hold a one-third share as a long-term investment. The government emphasized that any major strategic decisions concerning the 5G national license project will require prior approval from the Council of Ministers. The Minister of Communications will oversee the project’s implementation and provide regular updates to the Council.

In addition, the Council of Ministers ratified several international agreements aimed at enhancing Iraq’s global relationships. This includes a Memorandum of Understanding with Morocco for mutual visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders and a proposal for an Indian Consulate General in Najaf Province. The government also approved an Air Services Agreement with Jordan, which is awaiting ratification by the Council of Representatives.

These decisions reflect Iraq’s commitment to modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure, improving international relations, and fostering economic and political growth both regionally and globally.
