Omani Startup Sirius Develops AI-Powered Device for Deaf and Mute Communication, Gains International Recognition

A student-led startup in Oman, Sirius, has developed an AI-powered device aimed at enhancing communication for the deaf and mute, which has garnered international acclaim and attracted global investor interest. The company’s innovation, known as Language, includes smart glasses that convert sound into readable text and then into speech. This system is complemented by a smartwatch and a digital app designed to tackle literacy challenges, helping users interact more easily with the broader community.

Sirius’s innovation earned a silver medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, held from April 9 to 13.

Lian Saeed al Rahbi, one of the innovators behind the project, explained that the idea was inspired by the real-life needs of people with hearing and speech impairments. “The product was born out of a personal connection and a desire to address a real social need,” Lian said. “We conducted an in-depth study of the community’s requirements before developing the system.”

She further mentioned that feedback from users during the trial phase helped refine the device. “The confidence we saw from users was the greatest encouragement. We now have a fully functional digital model and we’re working on a long-term plan to market it.”

Lian also noted that international investors have shown interest in the device, describing it as “a tech breakthrough with a purely Omani youthful touch.” The team is currently reviewing commercial proposals to determine the best approach for reaching a global audience.

“We want to build a future that promotes innovation, inclusion, and dignity,” she added, encouraging young inventors to believe in their abilities and stay committed. “Never give up. Creativity knows no limits.”

The team plans to begin large-scale manufacturing of the device soon, focusing on accessibility and ensuring high production standards.
