Egypt Accelerates Airport Modernization with Smart Baggage Systems and AI Analytics

Egypt is fast-tracking the modernization of 11 major airports by implementing smart baggage handling systems and AI-driven analytics designed to streamline check-in and baggage operations. These upgrades aim to reduce mishandling incidents and improve real-time tracking for millions of travelers.

Central to this transformation is Cairo’s new Smart Control Centre, which enables live monitoring and enhanced coordination across airport terminals. EgyptAir is supporting this initiative through a significant network upgrade agreement with aviation technology provider SITA, whose AI tools underpin much of the new infrastructure.

The project is part of a broader collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Group member, which is facilitating private investment via public-private partnerships to improve infrastructure and service quality.

SITA’s 2025 industry report highlights that airports in the Middle East and Africa had one of the lowest mishandled baggage rates worldwide in 2024—6.02 bags per 1,000 passengers—even amid rising travel demand. Given that baggage mishandling costs airlines approximately USD 5 billion annually, Egypt’s smart system rollout reflects a concerted effort to boost travel reliability and reduce operational costs.
