One year after its debut in Historic Jeddah, TeamLab Borderless continues to captivate visitors with its innovative approach to digital art, where installations dynamically respond to movement, light, and seasonal changes. As Saudi Arabia’s first permanent digital art museum, it has welcomed guests from over 25 countries, attracting especially young people and art enthusiasts eager to experience contemporary art in new, immersive ways.
Situated within an open layout designed for exploration and interaction, the museum’s artworks evolve continuously, ensuring that no two visits are alike. This unique characteristic positions TeamLab Borderless as a cultural hub reflecting the aspirations of its audience and introducing novel methods of engaging with art.
The museum is part of the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s broader initiative to activate heritage sites as platforms for contemporary art, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. This national vision emphasizes empowering the cultural and creative sectors and enhancing the Kingdom’s status as a global center for art and technology.
In an interview at the museum’s launch, Toshiyuki Inoko, founder of TeamLab Borderless, described the concept underpinning the museum: “Everything is in a continuous relationship. Even though each element is independent, there are no boundaries in between, and they even influence each other.”
Many installations mirror natural rhythms. For instance, “Proliferating Immense Life” features flowers that change with the passing months. Other exhibits, such as “Forest of Lamps” and “Flowers in Infinite Transparency,” shift with the seasons, while “Memory of Topography” presents a static landscape subtly transformed through visitors’ movements.
Inoko highlighted several artworks created exclusively for the Jeddah museum. One notable piece is the staircase installation that depicts a cascading waterfall of sand, through which gigantic flowers grow vigorously—persistently emerging, falling, and repeating this cycle indefinitely.
Celebrating its one-year anniversary since opening in June 2024, TeamLab Borderless Jeddah exemplifies Saudi Arabia’s ambition to merge art and technology in a space of perpetual motion, offering every visitor a distinct and personal journey.
“The message that we wanted to convey to the world and the visitor is that the world itself is in a continuous relationship, and everything affects each other,” Inoko concluded.
