Omantel and du Activate Oman Emirates Gateway Submarine Cable to Boost Regional Connectivity

Muscat – Omantel, Oman’s leading integrated telecommunications provider and a key technology player in the Middle East, has announced the activation of a new fiber optic submarine cable system designed to enhance connectivity between Oman and the UAE. In collaboration with du, the UAE’s leading telecom and digital services provider, Omantel has brought online the 275-kilometer Oman Emirates Gateway (OEG), officials confirmed.

This cutting-edge submarine cable links three major international data centers: Equinix MC1 in Barka, Oman; datamena DX1 in Dubai, UAE; and Equinix SN1 in Salalah, Oman. The OEG aims to redefine the regional digital landscape by providing a seamless, high-capacity express connection that supports the Gulf’s evolution into a global telecommunications hub.

The project enhances the operational efficiency of existing networks, expands connectivity, increases data transmission speeds, and elevates customer experience with advanced commercial offerings. It also strengthens the robustness and reliability of network infrastructure.

Samy al Ghassani, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at Omantel, described the OEG activation as a pivotal milestone in Oman’s digital transformation journey. He emphasized the project’s role in enriching regional content and establishing a high-capacity corridor to empower businesses across Oman and the UAE, propelling innovation, growth, and global competitiveness.

Karim Benkirane, Chief Commercial Officer of du, called the Oman Emirates Gateway “more than just an optical cable,” describing it as a critical bridge for future-proofing the region’s digital infrastructure. He highlighted the cable’s significance for hyperscalers, content providers, and international carriers, enabling them to expand their presence and meet the growing demands of the digital age.

The OEG delivers transformative benefits including dual-route resilience via terrestrial and subsea pathways, ensuring unmatched reliability and optimal network performance. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure is designed for scalability and long-term sustainability, supporting emerging technologies.

This system provides faster cloud access and direct connections to key data centers, facilitating international business growth within a rapidly evolving digital environment.

The activation of the Oman Emirates Gateway reinforces Omantel and du’s status as leading wholesale telecom providers, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering progressive technological change. Their partnership aims to attract hyperscalers and global players to the region, enhancing overall connectivity quality and customer experiences.

Beyond improving network capabilities, the OEG project serves as a key driver of economic growth and technological innovation in both Oman and the UAE, strengthening the region’s digital ecosystem.
