Iraq Advances Plans to Launch Apple Pay, Boosting Digital Financial Services

Iraq is moving forward with plans to introduce Apple Pay as part of the government’s efforts to modernize its financial infrastructure and expand digital payment services.

According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), a government committee responsible for activating Apple Pay recently held a virtual meeting with Apple’s regional managers to review the technical and administrative requirements necessary for launching the service in Iraq. The discussions also covered integration mechanisms with Iraq’s national electronic payment system.

Separately, Al-Sharqiya TV reported that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has officially directed the rollout of Apple Pay for Iraqi users. A government source confirmed the initiative aligns with Iraq’s broader digital transformation agenda, which focuses on developing the electronic payments sector and increasing financial inclusion.

“The government is working to complete the technical and operational preparations to make this service available to users in Iraq,” the source said, emphasizing the program’s role in advancing Iraq’s digital economy goals.

A follow-up meeting between Iraqi officials and Apple is expected in the coming weeks to finalize technical and operational details.

If successfully launched, Iraq will join a growing list of Middle Eastern countries offering Apple Pay, allowing users to make secure, contactless payments through their iPhone and Apple Watch devices. This development marks a significant step toward expanding digital payment options and financial inclusion across Iraq.
