Morocco to Build 500MW Renewable-Powered Data Center in Dakhla to Enhance Digital Sovereignty

Morocco plans to construct a 500-megawatt data center powered entirely by renewable energy in Dakhla, Western Sahara, aiming to boost data security and strengthen the national cloud infrastructure, announced Digital Transition Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni. While project timeline and budget details remain undisclosed, this initiative aligns with a global trend of nations developing domestic data centers to ensure sensitive data remains within national legal jurisdiction.

The facility will join Morocco’s first data center launched at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, which has been offering cloud hosting services to public and private sectors since January. This expanding network of data centers underscores Morocco’s commitment to digital sovereignty and its ambition to become a regional digital hub for Africa.

As part of its digital modernization strategy from 2024 to 2026, Morocco plans to invest 11 billion dirhams ($1.22 billion), focusing on artificial intelligence and expanding fiber optic infrastructure to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
