Syria has officially returned to participation in the GSM Association (GSMA) after more than a decade of absence, signaling renewed openness and regional cooperation in telecommunications. The announcement followed a visit by a Syrian delegation led by Minister of Communications Abdel Salam Haykal to Jordan on July 30, 2025.
The Syrian Ministry of Communications stated that rejoining the GSMA allows Syria to benefit from international conferences, capacity-building programs, and access to the GSMA network’s resources. This reintegration coincides with the lifting of US sanctions after years of isolation.
During the visit, the Syrian delegation toured Jordan’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) facilities, reviewing advanced frequency monitoring and inspection technologies. Minister Haykal expressed Syria’s intent to leverage Jordan’s telecom expertise to modernize its infrastructure and foster bilateral cooperation.
Jordanian officials, including Minister of Digital Economy Sami Smeirat and TRC Chairman Bassam al-Sarhan, emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and regulatory collaboration to support digital transformation and economic development in both countries. Plans are underway to sign a memorandum of understanding to formalize cooperation and unify efforts in international forums.
The GSMA represents global mobile operators and related businesses, promoting investment and innovation in the mobile telecommunications sector worldwide.
Additionally, the Syrian Ministry announced the formation of the Syrian Alliance of Incubators and Accelerators (SAIA), a national network to unify support for startups and entrepreneurs, aiming to strengthen coordination among incubation and entrepreneurship programs across Syria.
