SLT-Mobitel’s Strong Recovery Positions It as Strategic Enabler of Sri Lanka’s AI and Digital Future

Colombo – SLT-Mobitel has reported a decisive turnaround in the first half of 2025, posting Rs. 4.3 billion Profit After Tax (PAT) compared to a Rs. 323 million loss a year earlier, marking a 148% rise in operating profit and an 18.9% reduction in finance costs. The results reinforce the company’s resilience and capacity to lead Sri Lanka’s digital transformation.

The financial revival comes after the NPP government confirmed SLT-Mobitel would not be sold, removing earlier uncertainty over divestiture. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eng. Eranga Weeraratne noted that policy clarity, combined with improved governance, innovative mobile packages, and stabilized network operations, has enabled the company to strengthen customer confidence and sharpen its strategic role in the national economy.

At company level, SLT PLC recorded an 873% year-on-year PAT increase to Rs. 2.6 billion in 1H 2025, while Mobitel shifted from a Rs. 1.1 billion loss to a Rs. 1.1 billion profit. Chairman Dr. Mothilal de Silva described the results as a reflection of “deep-rooted transformation” across governance, operations, and execution, positioning SLT-Mobitel as a national enabler of digital advancement.

Looking ahead, SLT-Mobitel will serve as the strategic partner of Sri Lanka’s inaugural National AI Expo & Conference on September 29–30, 2025. The event will showcase AI adoption in healthcare, education, agriculture, and finance, signaling the country’s ambition to emerge as South Asia’s AI hub.

SLT-Mobitel has already introduced AI-driven solutions such as Hello AI, the nation’s first AI-centric mobile package for youth, and AI Pazz, Sri Lanka’s first AI-powered legal research tool. With its fibre network reaching 95% of the population, the company is enabling applications like real-time tele-diagnostics, precision farming analytics, and 5G-enabled robotics.

Beyond commercial operations, SLT-Mobitel remains the backbone of Sri Lanka’s digital public infrastructure. It operates the Lanka Government Network, Schools Connectivity Network, and Gamata Sanniwedanaya rural programme, and recently secured the Lanka Government Cloud project, reinforcing its role in safeguarding data sovereignty and driving digital governance.

Through regional partnerships and continuous investment in infrastructure, SLT-Mobitel is not only accelerating Sri Lanka’s digital economy but also ensuring inclusive access, bridging digital divides, and cementing the nation’s position in the global technological landscape.
