Batelco, part of Beyon Group, has introduced Bahrain’s first Eco-SIM cards made entirely from recycled plastic, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The launch aligns with Beyon’s broader green agenda and marks a significant step toward reducing plastic waste in the Kingdom.
Going forward, all newly issued SIM cards will be Eco-SIMs, manufactured from recycled polystyrene sourced mainly from discarded refrigerators and household appliances. Once they reach the end of their lifecycle, these cards can themselves be recycled to produce new SIMs, establishing a circular economy that cuts down on virgin plastic usage and lowers carbon emissions.
Highlighting the milestone, Batelco General Manager Aseel Mattar said the initiative complements ongoing efforts across Beyon to embed sustainability into operations. She added that while eSIM adoption is growing, most customers still rely on physical SIMs, making this shift an important step in addressing environmental challenges. The Eco-SIM launch underscores Batelco’s role in driving innovative solutions that contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for Bahrain.
Batelco’s move is expected to reduce plastic waste, support environmental protection initiatives, and showcase how telecom operators can play a proactive role in sustainability.
