The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has launched the trial phase of its new Central Number Portability System, a nationwide service that enables mobile users to retain their existing phone numbers when switching between operators.
The trial, which began on October 19 and will continue until November 13, 2025, aims to test the technical readiness and operational efficiency of the system ahead of its full public rollout. According to the TRA, the upgraded platform is designed to make number transfers faster, more reliable, and completed within minutes, significantly improving the user experience.
The authority stated that the trial will assess system performance, network integration, and customer interface readiness, ensuring a seamless transition once the service goes live.
In preparation for this new system, the TRA had temporarily suspended mobile number portability services in August 2025 to facilitate migration to the new centralized platform. The suspension, effective from August 18, was implemented to guarantee a smooth and coordinated upgrade process across all licensed operators.
The initiative represents a major milestone for Oman’s telecommunications sector, removing one of the key barriers to switching providers. By allowing customers to keep their numbers, the new Central Number Portability System is expected to enhance market competition, drive service quality improvements, and provide greater flexibility for consumers.
