Taliban Claims Telecom Expansion Despite Recent Shutdowns in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Technology says telecommunications access has expanded nationwide over the past four years, with 3G users increasing from 6.2 million to 6.8 million and 4G coverage growing from 1.6 million to 6.9 million. The ministry also reported 22 million SIM re-registrations and more than 1,400 new telecom sites activated.

This announcement comes despite multiple recent disruptions, including a three-day nationwide network shutdown last month and cuts to fibre-optic services in several provinces. Those outages severely impacted banking, customs, healthcare, education, aviation, transportation, and overall daily life.

The Taliban says it has invested 12 billion afghanis into telecom development since its takeover. Yet Afghanistan continues to rank among the slowest and most expensive internet markets globally, raising concerns about true accessibility and service quality.
