Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has signed a major cooperation agreement with Airbus Defence and Space to design, manufacture and launch OmanSat-1, the Sultanate’s first national communications satellite.
Built on Airbus’s fully reconfigurable OneSat platform, OmanSat-1 will deliver high-capacity Ka-band coverage across Oman, its economic waters, and key regions in the Middle East, East Africa and Asia. The satellite marks a strategic step toward strengthening Oman’s digital sovereignty, enhancing cybersecurity, expanding rural connectivity and enabling resilient, independent national telecommunications services.
Space Communications Technologies (SCT), owned by the Oman Investment Authority, has been appointed as the national operator and executive arm for the programme. A dedicated Project Management Office within SCT will oversee design, manufacturing and operational readiness in collaboration with Airbus.
Omani officials highlighted the project as a turning point for the country’s space economy—advancing the National Space Strategy 2023–2033, building local talent and SMEs, enabling technology transfer, and supporting scientific research through joint programmes with universities.
Airbus affirmed long-term cooperation to develop sovereign capabilities and deliver a world-class geostationary satellite system. With OmanSat-1, the Sultanate positions itself to become a regional gateway for space services and a future-ready digital economy.
