Ooredoo Qatar to Invest $500 Million in New Global Cable Projects Linking Iraq, Oman and Turkey

Ooredoo Qatar has announced plans to invest more than $500 million in major international cable projects that will establish new terrestrial routes connecting Iraq, Oman and Turkey. The initiative aims to accelerate data movement, strengthen regional network resilience, and provide secure alternatives to vulnerable maritime pathways.

The new infrastructure will create direct land-based corridors that enhance regional connectivity and reduce reliance on cable systems passing through high-risk areas such as the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. Ooredoo Group CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo said the new system will “reshape communication routes” toward Europe by enabling faster, more reliable terrestrial connections.

The project aligns with Qatar’s broader strategy to expand its digital and economic footprint across the region. Over the past decade, Qatar has increased investments in Iraq’s infrastructure and telecom ecosystem — positioning the country as a strategic gateway for Gulf–Mediterranean connectivity and a potential data-corridor hub.

According to local reports, Iraq’s geographic location and growing transport potential make it a central component of Ooredoo’s long-term regional network vision.
