UNDP and GSMA Launch AI Capacity-Building Programme for Policymakers in Egypt

CAIRO — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Egypt, in partnership with GSMA, has launched a high-level Artificial Intelligence capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening policymaking and governance frameworks for AI across Egypt and the wider region.

The two-day training programme brought together senior government officials, regulators, and representatives from key national institutions, alongside participants from Libya, Sudan, Tanzania, and Jordan. The initiative reflects growing regional cooperation around responsible AI development and the need for coordinated policy approaches as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in public services and economic systems.

The programme focuses on enhancing policymakers’ understanding of AI governance, regulatory frameworks, and international best practices. Delivered by GSMA experts, the sessions introduce practical tools such as the Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap, designed to help institutions assess readiness levels and define pathways for safe, ethical, and inclusive AI adoption.

Officials highlighted that the initiative supports Egypt’s broader digital transformation agenda by promoting transparent, human-centered AI deployment while fostering institutional collaboration. The programme also serves as a platform for dialogue among government entities, recognising that effective AI governance requires shared responsibility and coordinated policy development.

The training builds on the existing UNDP–GSMA Memorandum of Understanding, under which both organisations continue to work together to strengthen digital innovation and national capacity across Egypt and neighbouring regions, laying the groundwork for more structured and responsible AI implementation.
