Transportation Ministry introduces sustainability initiatives in line with UN Sustainable Transport Decade

MANAMA, 16 February 2026: Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications has launched a package of sustainability initiatives aligned with the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport, reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to environmentally responsible infrastructure development and long-term sector resilience.

The announcement was made during an event that also recognised winners of the Sustainathon for Sustainable Mobility competition, an initiative designed to encourage university students to develop innovative solutions for sustainable land transport. The programme aims to promote youth participation in advancing environmentally conscious mobility solutions while supporting the sector’s future development.

Officials stated that the new initiatives reflect a broader institutional approach to sustainability, integrating environmental, social, and governance principles into sector planning and operations. The initiatives support Bahrain’s national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 through measures such as emissions reduction, renewable energy adoption, and the implementation of circular carbon economy practices.

The Ministry highlighted the importance of the transport and telecommunications sectors as key contributors to economic growth and quality of life, while acknowledging the environmental challenges associated with infrastructure development. Transport currently accounts for approximately 10 percent of Bahrain’s total carbon emissions, underscoring the need for accelerated adoption of sustainable mobility solutions.

As part of the programme, the Ministry launched its Environmental, Social and Governance Sustainability Report, developed in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative standards. The report provides a structured assessment of sector performance and identifies areas for improvement aligned with international best practices. The Ministry also announced a memorandum of understanding with the Safa platform to support carbon offset initiatives and strengthen partnerships with environmental programmes.

Additionally, a new platform dedicated to projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals has been introduced to enhance project management, improve planning efficiency, and support data-driven decision-making across government initiatives.
