Pakistan, Algeria discuss investment cooperation in energy, mining, digital sectors

ISLAMABAD – 20 February 2026: Pakistan and Algeria have agreed to enhance investment cooperation across energy, mining and digital development, as Islamabad intensifies efforts to attract long-term foreign capital and deepen international partnerships.

The development follows a meeting between Federal Secretary of Pakistan’s Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), Jamil Qureshi, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Brahim Romani.

According to Qureshi, both sides discussed plans to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency and the SIFC to formalise institutional collaboration and streamline investment engagement.

He noted that the two countries see strong potential in strategic sectors including energy, mining, digital transformation and industrial development.

Qureshi highlighted Algeria’s experience in leveraging natural resources through entities such as Sonatrach, executing large-scale mining projects and advancing industrial localisation through partnerships with global firms including Stellantis. He said these models offer useful insights for Pakistan as it advances priority initiatives such as the Reko Diq mining project, renewable energy expansion and electric vehicle manufacturing.

The discussions also covered cooperation in digital governance and smart agriculture, drawing on Algeria’s satellite-based agricultural and climate monitoring systems.

Established in 2023, the SIFC is a hybrid civil-military body aimed at accelerating foreign investment approvals and coordinating major projects in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, livestock and minerals. It plays a central role in Pakistan’s broader strategy to stabilise its economy and attract sustainable foreign investment.

Pakistan has recently expanded outreach to partners across the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa, focusing on project-based, long-term economic collaboration rather than short-term financial assistance.

No timeline was disclosed for the signing of the proposed MoU.
