Ethio Telecom has unveiled a new internet-based video streaming platform, teleStream, positioning it as a modern alternative to traditional satellite television services.
At launch, teleStream offers more than 60 live TV channels alongside over 350 video-on-demand titles. The service can be accessed through fixed broadband connections or via SIM-enabled set-top boxes that transform conventional televisions into smart TVs.
According to the operator, all broadcasts are hosted on its local cloud infrastructure to ensure lower latency and improved performance. Content delivery is powered through Ethio Telecom’s fibre, 4G and 5G networks, enabling seamless streaming across its broadband ecosystem.
The company is marketing teleStream as a superior option to satellite dish services, highlighting its resilience against weather disruptions such as heavy rainfall. Ethio Telecom also emphasised cost benefits for broadcasters, noting that local hosting removes the need for expensive foreign currency satellite leases, reducing exposure to forex fluctuations.
Beyond households, the service targets commercial establishments including hotels and guest houses. teleStream allows businesses to deliver entertainment to both local and international guests without installing and maintaining multiple satellite dishes.
The platform is also positioned as a digital information channel for remote learning and institutional use. Schools and universities can leverage teleStream for digital libraries and educational content delivery, while hospitals can utilise it for awareness and informational programming.
For content creators, teleStream provides a distribution platform where material can be offered free or monetised. Advertising agencies are also expected to benefit from targeted advertising capabilities enabled by the digital platform.
In parallel with the streaming launch, Ethio Telecom announced the implementation of a digital operations support system designed for “zero-touch” service delivery. Customers can now subscribe to new services, modify existing packages, or report issues through the telebirr SuperApp without visiting physical service centres. Payments for services, including teleStream subscriptions, can also be completed via the telebirr mobile money platform.
