Starlink Internet Launched on Bangladesh Trains in Trial Deployment

Bangladesh has introduced Starlink satellite internet on moving trains for the first time, marking a new step in the country’s efforts to modernize passenger connectivity services.

The Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) launched the high-speed satellite-based internet service on a trial basis on 13 March, with support from Bangladesh Railway. Passengers can now access Starlink Wi-Fi while travelling on selected trains.

Initially, the service is available on three trains: Parjatak Express, Upaban Express and Bonolota Express. Passengers on these routes are currently receiving the internet service free of charge as part of the pilot programme.

The initiative was implemented under the direction of Rehan Asif Asad, adviser to the prime minister for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The project aligns with the government’s broader plan to introduce free Wi-Fi services across airports and railway stations nationwide.

To monitor the trial operations, Asad visited the project site twice on 11 March. During his visit, he said passengers would be able to access the Starlink internet service by scanning a QR code.

“The service has been introduced on a trial basis for now and necessary steps will be taken to further improve it,” he said.

BSCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Imadur Rahman noted that introducing Starlink connectivity on moving trains would significantly enhance passenger experience and modernize railway travel.

Railway officials said that if the pilot programme proves successful, the Starlink-based service will gradually be expanded to other high-demand and non-stop intercity trains across Bangladesh.

With reliable internet connectivity onboard, passengers could perform various online activities during their journeys, including freelancing, attending online classes and carrying out office work.
