Strategic Pivot Toward International Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Hubs

The national telecommunications provider of Sri Lanka is launching an aggressive global expansion strategy centered around a new operational base in Singapore. By establishing a fully-owned subsidiary in the city-state, the group aims to compete directly with global tech operators and handle its international wired network operations more effectively. The company has already secured initial service-based licenses and is currently pursuing full facilities-based regulatory approval to seamlessly manage its global business from the regional hub, citing the proximity to other major international carriers as a primary driver for the move.

This expansion is supported by massive investments in undersea infrastructure, specifically through a growing network of submarine cables. The provider currently operates four international systems and is a key partner in the upcoming SEA-ME-WE 6 project. This new high-capacity cable, expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027, will significantly boost data transmission speeds and position the region as a vital digital transit node in the Indian Ocean. These infrastructure developments are intended to diversify income streams and increase international revenue by leveraging enhanced bandwidth to serve a broader global digital ecosystem.
