The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) reported on Tuesday that subscriptions to fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology in Jordan experienced a remarkable 64% increase in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter. The number of 5G subscriptions rose to 51,491 in the second quarter, up from 31,334 in the previous quarter.
Additionally, fixed broadband internet subscriptions reached 793,000, with a household penetration rate of 32.9%, slightly down from 798,000 subscriptions and a 33.3% penetration rate in the first quarter. In terms of broadband technology usage, 18% of subscriptions utilized Fixed Wireless Broadband Access (FBWA) technology, while xDSL accounted for 11%.
Fibre optic technology remained dominant, comprising 70% of subscriptions with a total of 556,000 in the second quarter, compared to 548,000 in the first quarter.
The report also revealed data consumption trends, indicating that the volume of data consumed through fixed broadband services reached approximately 1.289 billion gigabytes in the second quarter, an increase from 1.249 billion gigabytes in the first quarter. Average monthly data usage per subscription grew by 4% to 542 gigabytes, up from 521 gigabytes in the previous quarter.
Total mobile broadband subscriptions reached 7.908 million by the end of the second quarter, with prepaid subscriptions making up 71% and postpaid subscriptions accounting for 29%. Mobile phone subscriptions had a penetration rate of 68.1% of the population, reaching 104.7% for individuals over the age of 15.
Furthermore, a total of 290 million text messages were sent by the end of the second quarter, according to the report.
