Bayanat, specializing in AI-driven geospatial solutions, and Yahsat, the UAE’s premier satellite services provider, have successfully launched their inaugural low Earth orbit (LEO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, which entered orbit last week.
This venture, executed in collaboration with ICEYE, a leader in SAR satellite operations, marks a significant step within the UAE’s Earth Observation Space Programme aimed at developing national satellite remote sensing and Earth observation capabilities.
The satellite utilizes SAR technology, an active sensing system that illuminates and measures the Earth’s surface to produce high-resolution images under any weather conditions or time of day, unlike traditional optical imaging satellites.
ICEYE highlights that its radar antenna can capture larger areas and deliver high-resolution imaging of smaller regions, offering enhanced value over other new space SAR services.
This satellite is the pioneer of a planned SAR constellation that promises persistent monitoring solutions. It will capitalize on Yahsat’s extensive upstream and midstream capabilities and Bayanat’s downstream expertise, covering the entire value chain of SAR applications.
With more frequent revisits over the Middle East, the satellites will provide near real-time, high-definition terrestrial images. This capability will significantly bolster Bayanat and Yahsat’s ability to deliver timely and precise geospatial insights essential for disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility applications.
Previously reported in December 2023, Bayanat and Yahsat’s impending merger to form Space42 was ratified by shareholders in April, indicating a strategic consolidation aimed at enhancing their operational scope and market reach.
