Muscat, Oman – Oman is taking a significant step towards understanding the impact of its digital economy by launching a project to measure its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in partnership with the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), will conduct this comprehensive survey until May 2025.

The project aims to quantify the added value generated by two key sectors:

  • Communications and Information Technology: This includes assessing the contribution of telecommunications, IT services, and other digital-related activities.
  • Digital Financial and Insurance Services: The project will measure the value added by financial and insurance services that are exclusively provided through digital channels.

To achieve this, the survey will target approximately 1,300 establishments of all sizes operating in these sectors across Oman. The data collected will focus on the establishments’ performance in 2023 as the primary reference point.

This initiative reflects Oman’s commitment to understanding and promoting the growth of its digital economy. By accurately measuring the contribution of these key sectors to GDP, the government can make informed decisions regarding policies, investments, and strategies to further develop the digital economy and drive economic growth.

The findings from this project will provide valuable insights into the current state of Oman’s digital economy and its potential for future growth. This data-driven approach will enable the government to effectively support the development of the digital sector and ensure its contribution to the overall economic prosperity of Oman.
