Sri Lanka Enters Public 5G Era with Commercial Launch

Sri Lanka has officially entered the public phase of fifth-generation mobile connectivity following the commercial launch of 5G services by Dialog Axiata PLC and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel), the country’s two leading telecom operators.

SLT-Mobitel launched its commercial 5G service at One Galle Face Mall in Colombo, showcasing high-speed internet, low-latency connectivity, real-time gaming, and augmented and virtual reality applications. SLT Group Chairman Mothilal De Silva said the technology will enable faster data transmission and support the broader adoption of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and cloud-based services.

Dialog Axiata announced the launch of Dialog 5G Ultra a day earlier. The network is supported by more than 220 live 5G sites nationwide and currently serves over 1.5 million subscribers. Dialog Group CEO Supun Weerasinghe said the launch marks a major milestone in strengthening Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure, positioning 5G as a key enabler of innovation, productivity, and inclusion across the digital economy.
