Tunisia Rolls Out Smart Grid Pilot to Improve Power Reliability

Tunisia’s state utility, Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG), has launched a specialized smart grid pilot in the Moknine region to modernize the national distribution network. Funded by a 15-million-dinar ($5 million) grant from the U.S. government, the project integrates advanced technologies to detect outages automatically. The initiative is a cornerstone of STEG’s strategic vision to transition toward a more resilient, digitalized energy infrastructure capable of supporting the country’s goal of reaching a 35% renewable energy mix by 2030.

The pilot features a Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR) system, developed in partnership with U.S. firms, which restores power without manual intervention. To ensure seamless communication, Nokia has deployed a private LTE (pLTE) network for real-time monitoring of the distribution system. This program, running through 2026, aims to reduce energy losses, improve load management, and pave the way for a nationwide rollout of smart meters, which will provide customers with more accurate tracking and usage-based billing.
