Qatar Airways expands Starlink fleet to 150 widebody aircraft

Qatar Airways has expanded its Starlink-equipped widebody fleet to 150 aircraft after completing the rollout across its Boeing 787-8 sub-fleet and introducing Starlink on the Boeing 787-9 for the first time globally.

The airline said it completed installation across its 787-8 fleet in seven months and remains on track to finish the broader Boeing 787 rollout by the end of 2026.

The latest milestone follows earlier Starlink deployment programmes across Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets.

Boeing 787-9 becomes latest Starlink-equipped aircraft type

Qatar Airways said it has become the first airline globally to operate a Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9.

The carrier has also completed deployment across its Boeing 787-8 aircraft, taking the total number of Starlink-connected widebody aircraft in service to 150.

The airline said the wider Boeing 787 programme remains scheduled for completion before the end of 2026.

Rollout follows 777 and A350 programmes

The 787 deployment builds on Qatar Airways’ earlier Starlink installation programmes.

The airline said it completed its Boeing 777 programme in nine months and its Airbus A350 programme in eight months.

It now operates Starlink-equipped Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 fleets, giving it one of the broadest widebody satellite connectivity deployments in commercial aviation.

Starlink speeds reach up to 500 Mbps

Qatar Airways said Starlink can deliver onboard Wi-Fi speeds of up to 500 Mbps.

The service is offered free of charge on equipped flights and is designed to support uses including work, messaging, streaming and other connected applications during the journey.

The airline is also extending gate-to-gate connectivity across more routes in its network.

According to Qatar Airways, Starlink-enabled services are now available on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes spanning six continents.

More than 23 million passengers have used the service

Since launching Starlink onboard in October 2024, Qatar Airways said more than 23 million passengers have connected to the service across over 86,000 flights.

The airline currently operates up to 323 Starlink-equipped flights per day.

It said the overall installation programme has now passed 83% completion.

Connectivity becomes a core part of the passenger proposition

Qatar Airways is positioning high-speed connectivity as a standard part of the passenger experience rather than a premium add-on.

That is a significant shift in airline connectivity strategy.

Traditional inflight Wi-Fi has often been constrained by slower speeds, limited capacity and paid access models. LEO satellite systems such as Starlink are changing that model by offering lower latency and greater bandwidth.

For airlines, the result is a stronger opportunity to offer digital experiences that more closely resemble what passengers expect on the ground.

Qatar Airways’ Starlink rollout demonstrates how quickly satellite connectivity is becoming embedded into premium long-haul aviation.

Reaching 150 equipped widebody aircraft gives the airline substantial scale and allows it to offer a more consistent connected experience across a larger share of its network.

It also increases pressure on rival carriers to improve onboard connectivity as high-speed Wi-Fi becomes a more visible part of airline differentiation.
