Hutch Sri Lanka has partnered with Ceylon Waste Management to launch a new initiative aimed at promoting responsible e-waste disposal. The project focuses on installing e-waste collection stations at Hutch’s flagship store and brand shops, encouraging customers to recycle outdated mobile phones and batteries.
As part of this initiative, customers who recycle smartphones will receive 50GB of data valid for one year, while those disposing of 2G phones will earn 500 minutes of talk time, also valid for one year. Ceylon Waste Management, a specialist in e-waste recycling, will oversee the collection process and ensure the safe and environmentally responsible handling of the waste.
Saumitra Gupta, CEO of Hutch, emphasized the importance of this initiative in addressing the growing environmental concerns surrounding electronic waste. “We are not only encouraging responsible disposal but also linking sustainability to our services,” he said.
Sudesh Nandasiri, Managing Director of Ceylon Waste Management, highlighted the positive impact of the collaboration, noting that every mobile phone discarded in the collection bins reduces environmental pollution. The company also reassured customers that all data from discarded devices would be processed according to Sri Lanka’s data protection laws.
This partnership marks a significant step in promoting sustainability in Sri Lanka, with Hutch and Ceylon Waste Management working together to build a more sustainable future through responsible e-waste recycling.
