Pakistan Launches Digital Overhaul to Modernize Maritime Sector

Pakistan is undergoing a major digital transformation in its maritime sector to boost efficiency, transparency, and economic growth. Spearheaded by the Task Force on Revamping Pakistan’s Maritime Sector, the initiative focuses on modernizing port operations with advanced technology and digital integration. Key ports, including Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadar, will benefit from these reforms.

A central element of the initiative is the introduction of a Port Community System (PCS), designed to streamline information exchange between stakeholders. The PCS will be rolled out in phases, starting with vessel management and later expanding to other operations, including logistics and terminal gate management. Additionally, the Pakistan Customs department is upgrading its Web-Based One Customs (WeBOC) system to enhance service efficiency.

To improve transparency, all trade-related transactions will now be conducted digitally through the Pakistan Single Window (PSW), reducing corruption and streamlining payments. Further advancements include the implementation of Vessel Traffic Management Systems (VTMS) for navigation safety, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in risk management systems, and the use of modern Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) scanners for enhanced security.

These reforms aim to optimize cargo handling, attract foreign investment, and elevate Pakistan’s position as a competitive global trading hub. By leveraging digital solutions, the country seeks to improve trade facilitation, streamline port operations, and foster overall economic growth.
