Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest approximately $8.2 billion in India’s Maharashtra state in the coming years, as announced by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Monday. This investment is part of India’s strategy to expand its local cloud data storage infrastructure.
India’s cloud services market, valued at $8.3 billion in 2023, is projected to reach $24.2 billion by 2028, according to International Data Corporation. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that this investment will drive job creation and is expected to roll out between 2029 and 2030.
AWS plans to deploy advanced technologies, including its own graphics processing units and cloud management services, in India. The company currently operates data centers in Mumbai, which opened in 2016, and Hyderabad, which launched in 2022.
This follows a previous $2 billion investment pledged by Amazon last year to bolster its e-commerce operations in India, one of Asia’s largest economies.
