At MWC Barcelona, Sparkle and Turkcell announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a subsea cable solution in the Mediterranean. This collaboration aims to deliver uninterrupted, high-quality internet services while strengthening the companies’ strategic positions and improving regional connectivity.
The MoU focuses on constructing a 4,000 km diversified subsea cable route connecting Türkiye to the European telecommunications ecosystem. The cable, which links Izmir to Chania, will carry more than 25 Tbps per fiber pair, utilizing Sparkle’s BlueMed Cable System to extend between Chania and key Points of Presence in Milan.
This project strengthens the resilience of global data infrastructure and provides a reliable, secure connectivity option for hyperscalers and content providers looking for seamless data transfer between the East and the West. The subsea cable solution is designed to handle growing demand for high-capacity internet services, enhancing the stability of international communications.
Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, commented, “We are very pleased with this agreement with Turkcell, which confirms Sparkle’s commitment to strengthening connectivity in the Mediterranean basin. The low-latency path between Izmir and Chania, integrated with BlueMed, creates a new digital corridor for communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.”
Dr. Ali Taha Koç, CEO of Turkcell, added, “This collaboration is also part of the development of our GreenMed project, which will stimulate digital acceleration throughout the region and beyond.”
This subsea cable solution, with its impressive capacity and geographical redundancy, enhances the resilience of global data infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted international data connections even in the event of disruptions along traditional paths.
