In response to the escalating deportation of refugees from Pakistan, Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) has begun distributing free mobile phone SIM cards to Afghan returnees, alongside offering telecommunications and internet services. AWCC’s initiative also includes free voice calls and internet packages for the deported migrants.
Ibrarullah Zahir, Sales Manager of AWCC in the eastern zone, confirmed that the company is providing these services as part of their social responsibility efforts to support the returnees. Local authorities in Nangarhar have called on all telecom networks to offer 24-hour services to the returning migrants.
Zabihullah Zaki, head of the Telecommunications and Information Technology Department in Nangarhar, acknowledged the collaboration of telecom companies in assisting the migrants and ensuring their connectivity. AWCC’s teams are on standby 24/7 to offer services to returnees in the region.
The initiative has been welcomed by the returnees, who have expressed gratitude for the free SIM cards and services provided. Pakistan has recently intensified its deportation campaign, affecting hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees, many of whom have lived in Pakistan for years. Reports from returnees indicate rising harassment and the confiscation of belongings by Pakistani authorities.
