Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission Chairman Discusses Data Protection and Collaboration with Huawei

On Thursday, Nawfal Abu Raghif, Chairman of the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), emphasized the importance of data protection and adherence to digital sovereignty regulations during a meeting with William Yang, General Manager of Huawei Iraq. The meeting, held at the CMC headquarters in Baghdad, focused on potential cooperation in developing communications infrastructure and providing technical training for Iraqi personnel within the framework of legal and sovereign standards.

Abu Raghif highlighted the need to develop mechanisms for registering devices and importing technical equipment in line with national standards and CMC regulatory instructions. He stressed that these efforts should ensure a smooth flow of operations without compromising Iraq’s technical sovereignty.

The discussion also covered Huawei’s support for telecommunications network expansion projects, particularly in underserved regions, aiming to bridge the digital divide and improve the equitable distribution of telecom services across the country. Huawei’s delegation reviewed the company’s cybersecurity standards and reaffirmed their commitment to complying with Iraq’s data protection regulations and digital sovereignty requirements. The company emphasized its intention to operate strictly within the controls established by the CMC.
