Oman to Explore Strategic Opportunities in Growing Sports Economy at Tejarah Talks

Oman’s rich sporting heritage and natural advantages position it well to capitalize on the rapidly expanding global sports economy. On Tuesday, April 29, at 11:00 am, industry leaders will gather at the Civil Aviation Authority Training Centre to explore strategic opportunities within this dynamic sector.

The 70-minute Tejarah Talks session, titled “Game On: The Potential of Oman’s Sports Economy,” will bring together experts with deep insights into both the country’s competitive advantages and emerging global trends. The global sports industry, now valued at $2.65 trillion, continues to grow rapidly, and Oman is keen to tap into its potential.

Moderated by Jamal Al Asmi, Executive Producer of Reality CG, the panel will feature prominent figures such as Pankaj Khimji, Foreign Trade & International Cooperation Advisor at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Investment Promotion (MoCIIP); Joe Rafferty, Events Director at Oman Sail; and Ali Al Ajmi, CEO of Sabco Sports.

Key topics of discussion will include opportunities in sports tourism, a $583 billion global industry, and the rapidly expanding eSports sector, valued at $6.6 billion with over 500 million viewers worldwide. The sustainable sports market, projected to grow at a 7.9% CAGR to $26.2 billion by 2032, aligns well with Oman’s 2050 Net Zero target.

The session will highlight Oman’s unique, year-round sports offerings, including its diverse landscapes and favorable climate for sports tourism and events. Discussions will also cover infrastructure development through public-private partnerships and career opportunities in sports management.

Oman’s demographics, with a median age of 29 and internet penetration exceeding 95%, make it an ideal market for emerging sports sectors like eSports. The panel will examine successful international models, including Barcelona’s Olympic investments and Singapore’s Sports Hub, to provide valuable insights for Oman’s strategic sports planning.

In addition to economic potential, the session will address sports’ societal impact. Research shows that strong sports infrastructure improves social outcomes and reduces national healthcare costs through increased physical activity.

Organized by the Oman Business Forum in association with MoCIIP, and supported by MHD, Nortal, Invest Oman Lounge, and Oman FM, April’s Tejarah Talks aims to provide actionable insights for investors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders interested in developing Oman’s sports sector in line with Vision 2040 objectives.
