Bangladesh Invites Elon Musk’s Starlink to Prevent Future Internet Shutdowns

Bangladesh has officially invited Elon Musk’s Starlink to enter its market, aiming to prevent future internet shutdowns, according to Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. In a Facebook post, Alam criticized the frequent internet shutdowns under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, calling them a tool used by dictators to suppress protests and opposition movements. He emphasized that these shutdowns have significantly affected freelancers, with many losing contracts and jobs permanently.

Alam highlighted that the introduction of Starlink’s satellite internet service would prevent any future government from fully shutting down the internet, ensuring continuity for BPO firms, call centers, and freelancers. The move is expected to guarantee uninterrupted internet access for critical sectors in Bangladesh, despite potential political tensions.

Earlier this year, on February 19, Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus formally invited Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, to visit Bangladesh and oversee the launch of Starlink satellite internet service in the country, with plans to implement it within 90 working days.
