Robi Axiata has announced a collaboration with renewable energy companies FloSolar Solutions and GreenPower Asia to establish a 100 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power park to support its operations in Bangladesh. The companies signed a tripartite MoU to form a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) for the park’s development and management.
The solar park will be built under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, with Robi Axiata as the sole customer through a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA). This initiative is expected to reduce Robi’s carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 68,200 tonnes annually.
Perihane Metaweh, Robi Axiata’s Chief Technology Officer, described the project as a “game changer” in the company’s sustainability efforts. She emphasized that securing 100 MWp of renewable energy not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also drives cost-efficiency and strengthens Robi’s position as a leader in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices within Bangladesh’s telecom sector.
While Robi has identified several potential sites for the solar park, a final location will be chosen after a detailed feasibility study. Additionally, the SPV will assess the feasibility of equipping up to 16,000 of Robi’s mobile base stations with solar energy, as part of the telco’s ongoing initiative to add solar power to select stations since 2022.
The project benefits from a recent policy draft by the Bangladesh government, which allows private companies to develop and sell power without requiring long-term government off-take agreements.
