Iran is set to provide 5G internet access to residents in its major metropolises by the end of the current calendar year in March 2025, according to the country’s telecoms minister, Sattar Hashemi. The government plans to hold auctions in the coming days to allocate the necessary radio frequencies to expand the 5G network.

Hashemi expressed hopes that the rollout will focus on major cities, marking a significant step in the country’s mobile internet infrastructure. He also announced that Iran had reached an agreement with South Korean authorities to enable 5G functionality on Samsung phones imported into the country.

In a post on X, Hashemi highlighted that expanding the 5G network has been a key priority for the Ministry of Telecommunications. The 5G network will offer Iranian users download speeds of up to 500 megabits per second (mbps), enhancing experiences in online services, gaming, and movie streaming.

According to international speed monitoring data, the average mobile internet speed in Iran reached 37.36 mbps in May 2024, with the country improving its global mobile internet ranking by three positions to 73rd. Iran’s Communications Regulatory Authority also revealed that the number of 5G mast sites had increased to 1,313 by late March 2024.
