Libya Launches ‘Medusa’ Submarine Cable to Connect with Europe and Boost Digital Transformation

The Libyan Post, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Company (LPTIC) has officially launched the “Medusa” submarine cable project, a strategic initiative that will connect Libya to Europe through an 8,700-kilometer undersea cable.

The launch ceremony was attended by key figures, including Abdelbaset Al-Baaour, Head of the General Authority for Communications and Information; Youssef Abu Zuwaita, LPTIC Board Chairman; Mahmoud Al-Saqoutari, Mayor of Misrata; and other telecommunications company officials.

According to LPTIC, the Medusa cable project represents a major leap for Libya’s telecommunications sector by linking the country to leading global internet service providers. This cable is expected to significantly enhance internet quality and speed in cities such as Tripoli, Misurata, and Benghazi. It will also support 5G applications, data centers, and cloud computing capabilities.

In addition to its technical benefits, the Medusa cable will improve digital services for Libyan citizens and bolster data governance within public institutions. The project is an integral part of Libya’s broader digital transformation efforts.
