Maroc Telecom Adopts Unified Governance Model as Morocco Emerges Among Top 10 EU Asylum-Seeking Nations

Rabat, Morocco — Maroc Telecom has transitioned to a single-tier governance structure, consolidating its Supervisory and Executive Boards into one streamlined Board of Directors. The move was ratified at the company’s Extraordinary General Assembly on June 18, 2025, and is expected to enhance operational efficiency and strategic execution.

Mohamed Benchaâboun, previously Chairman of the Executive Board, has been appointed CEO until March 1, 2027. The governance update coincides with the telecom giant’s digital expansion across Morocco and its African subsidiaries. The company emphasized that all former Supervisory Board members have retained positions on the new board, ensuring leadership continuity during this strategic shift.

Marrakech, Morocco — Meanwhile, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) reported that Morocco ranked 10th in the EU for asylum applications in 2024, with 25,347 submissions—a decrease of 18% year-over-year. Morocco was particularly prominent in Slovenia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Ireland, while countries like Italy recorded high rejection rates for Moroccan applicants.

Ireland and the European Commission have added Morocco to their “safe countries of origin” lists, allowing for faster asylum processing. Belgium also conducted fact-finding missions in Morocco to support EU asylum evaluations.

Morocco’s longstanding National Strategy for Immigration and Asylum (SNIA), launched in 2013, has regularized tens of thousands of migrants and integrated them into education and healthcare systems—reinforcing its role as a strategic EU partner in managing migration flows.
