Borouge Partners with Honeywell to Pioneer AI-Powered Autonomous Operations in Petrochemicals

Borouge, a leading petrochemicals provider specializing in polyolefins solutions, has teamed up with Honeywell to conduct a proof of concept for AI-powered autonomous operations at its UAE plant. This collaboration aims to deliver the petrochemical industry’s first AI-driven control room for full-scale, real-time operation, setting a new benchmark for AI application in the sector.

Borouge CEO Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi highlighted the company’s AI, Digitalisation, and Technology (AIDT) transformation programme as a catalyst for innovation, operational excellence, and business growth. Partnering with global AI leaders like Honeywell accelerates efficiency and strengthens Borouge’s competitive advantage.

The partnership leverages Borouge’s process technology expertise alongside Honeywell’s autonomous control capabilities to explore Agentic AI solutions and advanced machine learning applications. George Bou Mitri, President of Honeywell Industrial Automation for the Middle East and surrounding regions, emphasized the transformative potential of integrating AI and automation to boost efficiency, safety, and operational performance at scale.

The initiative focuses on deploying these AI technologies across Borouge’s Ruwais facilities, the largest petrochemical site globally, aiming to optimize production, reduce energy consumption, enhance safety, and lower operational costs.

This project is integral to Borouge’s AIDT programme, which is expected to generate $575 million in value in 2025. In 2024, Borouge’s extensive portfolio of over 200 AIDT initiatives—spanning operations, safety, sales, sustainability, and innovation—delivered $573 million in value.
