Saudi Arabia Launches Esports World Cup with Record £51.5 Million Prize Pool

Saudi Arabia has kicked off the Esports World Cup (EWC) in Boulevard City, Riyadh, featuring a record-breaking prize pool of £51.5 million. The tournament runs until August 24, hosting 2,000 players and 200 clubs competing across 25 tournaments. Over 2.6 million attendees are expected to experience the event.

Held in a custom-built esports village with arenas seating up to 2,000 spectators, the competition features 24 games including Call of Duty, League of Legends, and chess. The event aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, a plan to diversify the kingdom’s economy and create 39,000 jobs.

The esports industry’s rapid rise has drawn criticism accusing Saudi Arabia of “sportswashing” to improve its international image. However, Mike McCabe, COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, counters that the event reflects local passions, with nearly 70% of the population identifying as gamers. He emphasized the tournament fulfills the ambitions of the Saudi people and welcomes global visitors.

EWC aims to attract a broader audience beyond gamers, highlighted by ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo and rapper Post Malone’s sold-out opening ceremony performance. McCabe, a long-time esports veteran, praised EWC’s unique multi-game festival format, which offers diverse fan engagement over several weeks.

At least 54 UK nationals and British teams Fnatic and Wolves are competing, with qualifying rounds ongoing. The cross-game club championship awards points per win, crowning the top-ranked club as world champion.

Prior to competition, the EWC Festival celebrated gaming culture with community tournaments, anime cafes, cosplay, and retro arcades. Fans worldwide can follow the action live on Twitch, YouTube, and via gaming influencers.
