A new international survey has revealed that Moroccans increasingly rely on social media to access and discuss science information, highlighting the country’s growing digital engagement. Conducted under the Trust in Science Project (TISP) between November 2022 and August 2023, the study surveyed over 71,900 respondents across 68 countries, including Morocco.
Findings show that Moroccans typically access science information on social media once or twice a week, while they turn to formal science communication channels, such as museums or public talks, only once or twice a year. With 81% of Moroccans using social media in 2025, the study underscores how platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become crucial in shaping science communication, particularly in developing economies where traditional sources are less accessible.
The research also highlighted regional differences, with wealthier nations relying more on traditional news outlets, while lower-GDP countries reported higher exposure to science through social media. Researchers emphasized the importance of including Global South countries, like Morocco, in such studies to avoid over-reliance on Western-centric models of science communication.
In parallel with this focus on digital engagement, Morocco is deepening its investment in artificial intelligence research. Al Akhawayn University (AUI) in Ifrane and Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd University (PMU) in Saudi Arabia signed an agreement establishing the Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz Chair for Artificial Intelligence Applications. The initiative will drive applied AI research, foster innovation, and train Moroccan talent, while supporting the national priorities of both Morocco and Saudi Arabia.
AUI President Amine Bensaid stressed that the partnership strengthens Morocco’s role as a pioneering player in AI across Africa, combining academic excellence with technological innovation. PMU President Issa Al Ansari added that the initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which places AI at the center of its economic and social transformation.
