Bangladesh’s technology sector has witnessed remarkable growth, evolving from the early days of costly telecom services to its current ambition of becoming an intelligent nation. A key partner in this journey has been Huawei, which entered the Bangladeshi market in 1998—the same year the country introduced its first telecom policy.
Huawei disrupted the market by providing high-quality telecom equipment at competitive prices, enabling operators to reduce costs and expand mobile services to millions of subscribers. Over the years, the company has been instrumental in rolling out 3G and 4G networks, empowering Bangladeshis with affordable smartphones and digital access.
The company’s role extended into building nationwide transmission networks alongside BTCL and private NTTN companies, as well as supporting ICT infrastructure that underpins e-governance services. Huawei also helped Bangladesh transition into the 5G era, conducting the first 5G trial in 2018 and supporting the country’s commercial 5G launch in 2021—making it one of the few early adopters worldwide.
Today, Huawei is deeply involved in cloud computing, AI, and digital finance solutions, supporting institutions like bKash and multiple banks while powering smart classrooms, hospitals, and corporate data centres through Huawei Cloud. It has also championed renewable energy with smart photovoltaic solutions, including Bangladesh’s then-largest solar plant in Mymensingh, as well as rooftop solar projects that align with the government’s renewable energy goals of 30% by 2030 and 40% by 2041.
Beyond infrastructure, Huawei invests heavily in local talent development through programs such as Seeds for the Future, Women in Tech, and the Huawei ICT Competition. These initiatives aim to prepare Bangladeshi youth and women for future opportunities in technology.
Guided by its motto “In Bangladesh, for Bangladesh,” Huawei continues to commit over 20% of its revenue to research and innovation. The company remains a trusted partner in helping the nation realise its vision of an intelligent Bangladesh, driving progress in connectivity, sustainability, and digital inclusion.
