Tunis — October 30, 2025:
Tunisie Telecom continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding Tunisia’s digital sovereignty through its extensive network of submarine cables — vital conduits that carry more than 95% of global internet traffic. By maintaining and expanding these infrastructures, the operator ensures the country’s connectivity stability, resilience, and independence in an increasingly data-driven world.
Decades of Connectivity Milestones
Tunisia’s journey into the digital age began with SEA-ME-WE 1 in 1985, its first major international cable linking the nation to global networks. The 1990s saw the addition of SEA-ME-WE 2 (1992), providing high-speed access to Europe and the Middle East, and KELTRA (1995), the country’s first fiber-optic link capable of handling large data volumes. Together, they established the groundwork for Tunisia’s modern digital infrastructure.
Expanding Global and Local Reach
The launch of SEA-ME-WE 4 in 2005 positioned Tunisia as a key player in international data traffic, directly connecting it to major hubs across Europe and Asia. Four years later, the fully Tunisian Hannibal cable — connecting Kélibia to Italy — dramatically boosted international bandwidth, improving internet performance nationwide.
Domestically, projects such as the El Jorf–Djerba link have reinforced local connectivity, extending reliable internet access to previously underserved regions.
Driving the Digital Economy
Tunisie Telecom’s submarine cable network now underpins Tunisia’s digital transformation, supporting the backbone of services such as data centers, cloud computing, e-commerce, healthcare, and education. The company’s infrastructure investments are crucial to enabling the nation’s transition toward a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy.
Submarine cables have become far more than infrastructure — they are the lifelines of Tunisia’s digital future, symbolizing national autonomy, technological leadership, and global integration.
