Qatar’s Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has released updated national guidelines governing the construction, installation, and sharing of radio communications sites, aiming to accelerate the rollout of 5G and future technologies. The new framework consolidates three older regulatory documents into one unified regulation, streamlining processes for telecom operators and government entities while promoting collaboration across the sector.
The updated regulation introduces a harmonised approach to mobile infrastructure development, supporting efficient site sharing, reducing duplication, and ensuring compliance with modern technical and safety standards. It also establishes clear rules for ground-based towers, rooftop units, wall-mounted equipment, and temporary installations. The framework outlines strict safety distances, EMF exposure limits, and structural requirements aligned with international benchmarks.
By simplifying approval procedures and encouraging co-location, the CRA aims to improve transparency, enhance network quality, and accelerate nationwide deployment of advanced technologies. The guidelines also emphasise early coordination with municipalities and developers to ensure optimal site selection and smoother implementation.
According to Ali Al-Suwaidi, Director of Technical Affairs at CRA, the updated regulation is a major step toward elevating telecom quality and consumer experience while supporting Qatar’s National Vision 2030 for a digitally advanced society.
