Nepal Telecom has completed the full replacement of copper-based wireline services with fiber technology across the Far-West (Sudurpaschim) Province, marking a major milestone in the company’s nationwide modernization drive.
The transition was finalized after the company’s Provincial Directorate in Attariya completed fiber upgrades in all districts under its jurisdiction. The shutdown of the Gaddachauki Exchange in Kanchanpur district officially made the Far-West a copper-free province.
At an event held on 21 Magh 2082, Dravendra Kumar Chaudhary, Director of the Provincial Directorate Attariya, described the shift as a significant achievement in Nepal Telecom’s broader plan to phase out legacy copper infrastructure across the country.
With the transition complete, customers in the province can now access voice, high-speed internet, and IPTV services through a single optical fiber cable under the company’s NT Fiber brand.
Previously, Nepal Telecom delivered voice and data services across 68 locations in the Far-West using older copper networks. The company has now upgraded all those areas to fiber, including the Terai district of Kailali, which completed its migration in the first month of fiscal year 2082/83.
Fiber services had already been rolled out in the hilly districts of Bajura, Achham, Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Bajhang, and Doti. With Kailali’s conversion, the entire province now operates on fiber infrastructure.
Nationally, Nepal Telecom’s FTTH services are available in all 77 districts, though some local levels remain outside full coverage. According to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, the company serves more than 343,000 fiber users nationwide.
The copper-to-fiber shift is expected to improve service reliability, deliver higher internet speeds, and support advanced services such as HD voice and IPTV, aligning with Nepal’s broader digital infrastructure expansion goals.
