Oman’s Telecom Providers Warn Against Unauthorized Wi-Fi Sharing

Telecom service providers in Oman have issued a stern warning against the unauthorized redistribution or sale of Wi-Fi and other internet services, emphasizing that such activities are illegal and punishable under the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Law. In a mass message, providers highlighted that redistributing internet services outside the contracted residential or commercial premises is strictly prohibited.

Individuals found reselling or sharing Wi-Fi services with external parties risk having their service contracts terminated, facing early termination fees, and being barred from receiving internet services from any telecommunications provider for a period determined by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

To stay within legal boundaries, providers advise users to only obtain internet services directly from the 16 licensed operators in Oman. These operators maintain nearly 15,000 telecom towers across the country, supporting a range of services including 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies. According to a TRA report, there are 4,498 towers for 2G, 5,399 for 3G, and approximately 5,250 for 4G.

The report also notes a 12% increase in mobile broadband subscribers, with nearly 99% of the population now covered by 3G/4G services, marking a 10% growth since 2018. Despite the rise in broadband subscriptions, particularly in the Muscat Governorate due to its high population density and commercial activity, other governorates have seen significantly lower subscription rates.
