Oman has introduced the ‘National Program for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies’, aiming to strengthen its digital economy and align with Oman Vision 2040. Running from 2024 to 2026, the program focuses on integrating information and communication technologies into key sectors of the national economy.
Key Program Initiatives
The national AI program includes several initiatives designed to keep pace with global technological advancements. These include the creation of a national open data platform to assist entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers, as well as a national AI research and development center to support researchers and academics. The program also seeks to spread awareness and enhance research by implementing various computing initiatives across the country.
A notable project within the program is the creation of an AI “studio” where IT specialists, companies, and institutions can collaborate on technical solutions. Additionally, the program will establish an Omani language model using generative AI to capture the country’s cultural, historical, artistic, and scientific heritage.
Furthermore, Oman plans to establish a Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) center in partnership with the Ministry of Economy and the World Economic Forum.
Advancing Oman’s Digital Economy
Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, emphasized that this program builds upon the Executive Program for AI and Advanced Technologies launched in 2022. It aims to create a solid foundation for the application of AI and digital technologies, with the goal of fostering a robust digital economy that supports sustainable development.
The program is designed to introduce AI applications across economic and development sectors, with the goal of localizing advanced digital technologies, enhancing governance, and improving Oman’s ranking in global indices. Oman aspires to be among the top 50 countries in the Government AI Readiness Index.
By 2040, the program aims to increase the contribution of the digital economy to Oman’s GDP from 2 percent in 2021 to 10 percent.
