Algeria and Mauritania Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Data Protection Agreement

In a significant step forward for bilateral relations, Algeria and Mauritania have formalized their commitment to enhancing data privacy by signing a cooperation agreement on personal data protection. The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Algiers by Samir Bourehil, President of Algeria’s National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data, and Mohamed Lemine Ould Sidi, head of Mauritania’s Data Protection Authority. The signing ceremony was attended by Karim Bibi Triki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, along with senior officials from both nations.

The agreement aims to foster collaboration between Algeria and Mauritania, focusing on training and the exchange of expertise within their respective data protection authorities. Bourehil highlighted that this initiative reflects President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries while ensuring that technological advancements respect human dignity, privacy, and public liberties.

Ould Sidi praised the agreement as a testament to the longstanding and robust relationship between Algeria and Mauritania, driven by the political will of their leaders. He expressed hope that this cooperation would lead to vital decisions and recommendations for enhancing data protection frameworks in both nations.

During the visit, the Mauritanian delegation learned about Algeria’s achievements in personal data protection, including its legal and technical advancements. Algeria has notably established a digital information portal designed to facilitate communication between public and private entities regarding personal data management.

This agreement not only reinforces bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania but also aligns with Algeria’s broader objectives of digitization and safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms, as outlined in the country’s national strategy for personal data protection.
