Albania Signs Agreement for Underwater Cable Project with Telecom Egypt

Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama participated today in the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between the Hungarian company 4iG and Telecom Egypt, which aims to establish a direct underwater cable line between Albania and Egypt.

In his address, Prime Minister Rama emphasized that fiber optic cable networks serve as the highways of digital communication. He highlighted that the implementation of this project will facilitate an underwater intercontinental connection, positioning Albania as a key player in this strategic endeavor.

“This project is a cornerstone of what Albania aims to achieve by 2030,” said Rama. He added, “It will provide access to a new Mediterranean route for several Central European countries. This initiative not only enhances Albania’s portfolio of projects aimed at transforming the country into a champion of innovation, but it also instills confidence in the overall enterprise landscape. Although the project’s numbers may not seem staggering, its potential impact and value are immense. This marks a significant milestone for Albania’s future in 2030.”

The memorandum outlines commitments that Albania must fulfill as part of its cooperation with strategic partners, including the USA and the European Union. It emphasizes adherence to the highest security standards and the development of reliable digital infrastructure, as well as connectivity with third countries. The agreement promotes the selection of trustworthy subsea cable providers for intercontinental ICT projects, facilitating alternative digital routes connecting Europe, North America, and Asia.
