Algeria’s ICT Progress Applauded by ITU, Highlighting Commitment to Digital Inclusion

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has commended Algeria’s significant strides in information and communication technology (ICT) and its dedication to digital inclusion, as shared by Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki. At the opening of the regional ITU workshop titled “Towards Inclusive and Targeted Connectivity in the Arab Region,” Triki highlighted Algeria’s robust investments and policy efforts to make modern communication accessible to all citizens.

Alongside Meriem Benmouloud, Minister of Digitalization and Statistics, Triki emphasized the government’s drive to extend ICT access across Algeria, regardless of socioeconomic background or geographic constraints. Recent progress includes expanded mobile and fixed internet coverage, optical fiber development, and strong political backing from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to establish Algeria as a regional ICT leader.

Skilled Workforce and Technological Development

Triki praised Algeria’s skilled workforce, particularly its younger generation, as a key driver of ICT growth, contributing through entrepreneurial and tech-based initiatives. He outlined large-scale projects advancing Algeria’s digital transformation goals and bolstering its economic and technological landscape.

Strengthened ITU Partnership

Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algérie Télécom, viewed the workshop as a sign of ITU’s confidence in Algeria’s ICT initiatives and the collaboration between the two entities. Bentoumi noted that connectivity is essential for sustainable development, as digital access promotes social and economic inclusion. Algérie Télécom is expanding digital service accessibility through enhanced infrastructure, aligned with Algeria’s strategy for a digitally inclusive society.

Bentoumi highlighted digital equity as a core goal, with Algérie Télécom committed to equal ICT access nationwide. He praised ITU’s efforts to strengthen cooperation across the Arab region, critical to achieving regional digital development.

Regional Focus on Connectivity and Growth

Adel Darwish, ITU’s Regional Director for Arab States, lauded Algeria’s ICT coverage of over 85%. He noted that global digital connectivity is pivotal for sustainable development, with affordable mobile and internet access as essential components. However, 31% of the Arab population remains unconnected, particularly in underserved, remote, and rural areas with limited access to essential social services.

Darwish stressed the importance of the workshop in bridging connectivity gaps through practical solutions and investment prioritization. He reiterated the ITU Regional Office’s commitment to fostering cooperation among local, regional, and global stakeholders to enhance digital inclusion across the Arab region.
